The dancecrave studio - instruments used for music production the studio -> moog

A piece of classic analogue kit at last :) What better than a Moog. This page is dedicated to Bob Moog who sadly passed away on August 21st 2005.

Experiences

The prod is the one bit of kit which is not actually part of my MIDI setup although it is possible to get retrofit devices. One of note would be the synhouse midijack from the States.

Early taping efforts aside, the way I use the Moog is to play the whole song (or sections of into a Cubase Audio track and then sync it back into the song it was played to - easy. And the results are always good.

The prod is an excellent source of inspiration - not in the way a good preset synth is but because you can change one control and suddenly the sound is way different! When you lock both oscillators, the pitch wheel only operates one of them so a great phase shifting effect is implemented between the two.

Sounds

These are a few simple demo sounds I just came up with:

Sound Settings Audio
Phase shifting effect.
Single held note showing mainly the wonderful effect achieved by locking both oscillators together and varying the pitch of the second one.
The emphasis is also increased towards the end for a filter sweep.
Osc1: 32' sync=on wave=pulse
Osc2: 8' int=unison wave=saw
Glide=4
Tracking=half
Contour amount=7
Emphasis+cutoff=varied
Filter mod:
Attack=1 Decay=10 Sus=10
Sustain=off
Loudness countour:
Attack=1 Decay=10 Sus=10
Pitch=varied Modulation=0
Moog demo - MP3 size=319K
Classic squelchy bass line.
Emphasis is kept around
middle to 3/4
Cutoff is kept around low to
middle.
Tempo 140BPM (supposedly)
Osc1: 32' sync=on wave=saw
Osc2: 16' int=-P5 wave=triangle
Glide=4
Tracking=half
Contour amount=8
Emphasis+cutoff=varied
Filter mod:
Attack=1 Decay=1 Sus=0
Sustain=off
Loudness countour:
Attack=1 Decay=1 Sus=0
Pitch=center Modulation=0
Moog bass demo - MP3 size=109K
Housie bassline.
Tempo 120BPM
A nice sound but it has little in the way of bottom end. Perhaps it would have a second sub-bass beneath it or just a good deep bass drum.
Osc1: 32' sync=on wave=saw
Osc2: 16' int=unison wave=square
Glide=4
Tracking=half
Contour amount=7
Emphasis+cutoff=varied
Filter mod:
Attack=1 Decay=1 Sus=0
Sustain=off
Loudness countour:
Attack=1 Decay=1 Sus=0
Pitch=center Modulation=0

Family

Mini moog Moog have been producing electronic music instruments since the beginning of time, well before my time anyway! The family includes keyboard devices such as the Mini moog featured on the left, the Micro Moog and the polyphonic Poly Moog .

Large moogs I have seen include the Moog modular - not that I have actually played with it. For those who don't know it is modular in design and oscillators, filters, LFO units, amplifiers, mixers and so on are chained together to make sounds. The modular principle uses patch bays and jack ended fly leads to facilitate connection.

The unit I saw took up the whole of on side of a wall - impressive!

Incidentally, there used to be a modular on display in the basement of Turnkey Music in London. The idea was you could sample it if you bought a sampler from them (a small price to pay!!!). It was not there last time I looked so I have no idea where it is. Surely they can't have lost it :(

The latest addtition to the family (as on Aug 2006) is the Little Phatty Tribute, and it looks fun :) It may just be me, but I definitely see some similarity going on here. Excellent!!!
