dcthe studio
The dancecrave studio - instruments used for music production the studio -> korg o1/w

The Korg 01/W was the successor to the well known M1 in workstation form and offers many refinements.

There are several variations including one with a lovely 88 note weighted keyboard and a floppy disk version the 01/W-FD. The floppy is really useful for saving sequences from the onboard sequencer (which is also very good).

These days I mainly use the 01 for some spot sound which is still remains useful for (see below) and I know I can get the sound easily rather than searching a huge set of patches on another instrument! There are some very characteristic and authentic, classic sounds from the Korg O1.

Sounds of note

The following sounds are my favourite presets on the 01. But only a few! Perhaps at some point I will include some of my own sounds.

O1 Sounds of Special Note
Preset #
Sound Name
Comments
A00 Ephemerals A wonderful luscious choral pad. Trouble is everyone's used it!
A19
Jet Stream Great 'woosh' sound useful for leading in major musical changes.
A64
JStick Wah Good pre-acoustic modelling elec guitar.
A75
Log Drums Nice cool sound for backing percussion but in tune.
A99 Flutter Sexy chorus type sound, well used but not dead!
B19 Stadium!!! Cheesy 'I have an audience' sound in the right context, but use it as a replacement for the sea and it's great. Oxygene here I come!
B50 Hyperboria Nice playable chorus pad.
B70 Gasmore Characteristic 'decorating' or lead sound

Experiences

The 01 has been a great investment both for the sounds and as a controller keyboard. The joystick is great outputting 3 controllers (pitch, mod and breath) though most of the 'live' features I have never used.

The problem my 01 has suffered is that the INC / DEC keys have almost completely stopped working making data entry realy irritating - I am not sure if this is because the previous owner was a little heavy handed (or indeed me!) or the design is at fault. I have tried once to get to the back of the switches but it seems a big job.

I have finally managed to sort this problem out. It involved removing all the main PCBs and even the keyboard itself to get to the board with the switches on. I have replaced  all 6 of them with new switches (very cheap) from Maplin and now all works fine :)
